Prepping for the baby.. November 28, 2007

With mama not coming in time for the baby’s arrival, one of the most daunting tasks on my to do list has been to prep the freezer. I don’t mind cooking (who am I kidding!), as long as I know what to make. I could barely think of anything beyond taco meat. Finally, last night Imo and I got down to making our menu and cooking up 4 chickens, 10lbs of qeema and 5 lbs of boneless meat!!

For those of you looking to prepare your freezers in time for the baby, but dunno what to do, here’s a list of what we did!

Freezer List:

  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Chili
  • Taco
  • Chicken Hamburgers (made into cutlets)
  • Beef hamburgers (made into cutlets)
  • Roast beef
  • Unseasoned cooked qeema
  • Haleem
  • Tandoori chicken legs
  • Tandoori chicken cubed for kabab rolls, frozen in meal size ziplocs
  • Daal
  • Chicken Tikka legs
  • Whole chicken with seasoning
  • Seekh kababs
  • Qeema kababs

Still to do:

  • Achari chicken
  • Haleem

For most of the food, we made large batches and divided it into smaller containers before freezing. For food like achari chicken and haleem, I will be making them for dinner over the next three days and then freezing them in batches of one meal serving size in ziplocs. Labelled everything .. and voila! Its done.

People who made a difference to my life.. November 26, 2007

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read the message straight through, and you’ll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.

–Charles Schultz

Remember the days when you were forced to show up at parties coz your parents wanted you to? Remember when you found it so boring that all your parents did was talk, while you yearned to run or do something.. else!? Remember when your dad would tell you to sit patiently, like a good boy?

Generations change, but the cycle continues. Eesa, sorry for doing the same to you tonight.

Love, Baba!

No brand name. Simple, classy and chic. JUST the look I was looking for!

Diaper bag

It matches perfectly with the bedding set I will be getting inshaAllah. And its all for a mere price of $15! I thought they were joking the first time I ever saw it. I was walking through downtown yesterday looking for cute pink and brown stuff and the funny thing is… the same product in any other colour combination is half the price at most stores!! From H&M to Gap to boutiques on Front St, I noticed the same trend. There’s something so HOT about this colour combo! I absolutely LOVE it!

Learning Commons.. November 19, 2007

So i’m sitting in the learning commons, pretending to be studying, while my mind is completely anywhere BUT the books! Not to mention, I’m not even supposed to be here. I really should be sitting in class right now, watching a video on rape- a weapon of war. But i figured, it would be too depressing from my current state of mind and asked to be excused. Therefore, here I am supposedly working on my assignments and reports due in the upcoming weeks.

Time seems to be short these days. There simply arent enough hours in a day to get done all that I need to do for myself right now. Its great in a way, since it means I’m busy and not just focussing on the baby that isnt here yet. But it also means that I’m constantly feeling frustrated about not having completed everything I wanted to. With my current nesting instinct on its peak, everything that is lying around and not sortted through yet, feels highly offensive! Which makes me super crabby and cranky and poor Imo has to face the brunt of it :(

In other news, baby’s stuff is here alhamdolillah. We picked it up last friday and I’m itching to put it all out. Although the crib sheet isnt here yet, I cant wait to do everything else that needs to be done so far. After picking up the stuff, we went for a raptors game downtown, then spent the weekend at Moms and today I’m in school. We spent yesterday night at home and I was itching to do everything then but I promised chachi that we’d do it together so inshaAllah tommorow, we’ll tackle the work together. Hopefully, on my way home, we can stop stop by IKEA and pick up a dresser for the baby tonight – which would chop off one major task on my list of to-do’s.

We’ve also discovered that Baba will be doing some travelling next week … All the way to Dryden! Although its still in Ontario, its close to Manitoba/Winnipeg which means its a 2 hour flight to Thunder Bay and then a 4 hour drive from there. Everyday, Baba’s been giving baby a few pep talks about her arrival timing. He insists that she should arrive within the next few days so that his holidays can kick in and he could be home with us instead. But there are days when he gets naughty and insists that she should arrive after the 30th of nov, which creates funny kicking responses from her. I’m not sure if she’s telling him to ‘Get outta here, I’m perfectly comfy here’ or if she’s telling me: ‘Mama, get me outta here!’. *hmpph*

Eesa has also realized baby’s coming v. soon iA. We’ve been doing alot of preparation with him. MashaAllah he seems thrilled but I’m not exactly thrilled about his reaction and interaction with other kids. Hinamommy’s been a valuable resource and I’m using some of her advice inshaAllah – cant wait for you post abt it Hina!

(Hina and Ayesha: abt the hospital bag, its ALMOST packed, i’ll post the list once i’m done ;))

I think i’m heading back to class now! talk to you guys soon,

regards,

Sheza

My hospital bag which was ready by 8 mths during Eesa’s time, is not even close to being packed at 9 mths. Somehow, i cant recall what i took with me the last time, apart from Maryam’s funky purple monkey socks. And well socks, three of them, are what I have in my bag so far!

October’s over and November’s already almost have way done… Which means theres just about another 4-5 weeks to go before Freesia’s home inshaAllah. Which also means I have to cram in all my readings and asgmts before then – which is so not fun esp when I’ve got my babies on my mind!

Where time is flying to, I have no clue! Week after week, things keep happening and before we know it, we’re one more week closer to having Freesia with us iA. Our doctors appointment moved from every month to every two weeks to now every week. Seeing Dr. Kim is a pleasure and all three of us absolutely LOVE it. Esp Eesa, who gets to sit on my lap to check the heart beat and measure the tummy.

A couple of weeks ago Freesia gave us a scare when she changed positions. By 7 months, the baby should be upside down but this one, half way into my 8th month, was across my tummy… neither up nor down! From week 30-34, we’d go into the office hoping and praying she’d have changed positions but Alas! she hadnt.

Last week, I walked into Dr Kim’s office with an almost 100% certainty that she was head down now coz the kicks on the side had stopped. And indeed she had changed positions finally, Alhamdolillah.

I’ve also finally ordered freesia’s nursery beddings, diaper bag etc. Its exciting coz it should be here by this weekend inshaAllah and we should have most of the stuff done by next week. Our weekends have been jampacked with almaghrib classes but InshaAllah we’ll try to pull out some time to get it done.

Eesa monkey’s been doing great alhamdolillah. We’ve completed our Pre-K curriculum and will be starting KG in a week iA. I’ve also got some special piccys to share iA, perhaps I’ll have them up by this weekend iA.

Plz continue to remember us in your dua’as.
